FACT Of The Day

It’s time for another FACT Of The Day.

The most common bird on the planet is the chicken.

As this is not a particularly interesting FACT Of The Day and whilst on the topic of chickens, it seems an appropriate time to share with you a story that I discovered a few years ago... that again, may I add, my critics thought was a cock and bull story when I first told them.

This true story is about a chicken in the 1940's, called Mike, who lived without his head for a year and a half! Now that is something to crow about!

At five and a half months old, when he was just a spring chicken, his owner attempted to chop off his head, but the axe mixed (what a dumb cluck) and Mike was left nearly headless- bet that ruffled his feathers.  He was left with one ear and most of his brain stem enabling him to miraculously survive, I'm sure it wasn't all it was cracked up to be.

Thus giving Mike his alter ego as ‘Mike the headless chicken’.

Makes chickens that little bit more interesting doesn't it? No, maybe not. But it's egg on the faces of all the people who didn't think this story was true.. who's the bird brain now.

...Plus it is pretty funny that a chicken lived without a head for a year and a half (not the most attractive pet I can think of).

Additionally I can now relate to my sports teachers when they used to tell me I was running round like a headless chicken- they must have known about Mike as well.

FACT Of The Day

Here is today’s FACT Of The Day:

Fidgeting can burn about 350 calories a day.

In a society obsessed with losing weight, being skinny, and fad diets, it got me thinking if we have all been wasting our time at Weight Watchers and Slimming World, and squandering our time doing the Cabbage Soup diet, the 3 day diet, the Lemonade diet, the Baby-food diet, the No-Carb diet and all the other millions of diets I’m sure all of us have tried at some point.

What if the answer was much simpler and the way to lose calories was simply by fidgeting?

If you've tried every diet but to no avail, why not try some of the following much easier and much more fun ways to help you lose weight, and with none of the hard work and nasty tasting food substitutes.
  • ·        Laugh for 10-15 minutes a day and burn up to 50 calories.
  • ·        Shopping for 3 hours burns 641 calories.
  • ·        Brushing your teeth burns 12 calories every 5 minutes.
  • ·        Drink coffee, it increases the rate at which you burn calories.
  • ·        Chewing gum burns calories.
  • ·        Dance for 20 minutes and you can burn 100 calories.
  • ·        Sleep well: a poor night’s sleep causes people to choose less-nutritious foods.
  • ·        Relax. Stress causes the body to store more calories as fat.
  • ·        Typing on your computer for 48 minutes burns 100 calories.
  • ·        Watch less television. Adults who halve their television viewing time burn an extra 119 calories a day.
  • ·        Re-arrange your room for 45 minutes burns 280 calories.
  • ·        Sip iced water all day; it speeds up your metabolism and burns 100 calories.
  • ·        Eat more curries: spicy food can temporarily increase your metabolism.
  • ·        Eat salmon: people who eat salmon lose significantly more weight than people who eat beef.
  • ·        Watching 2.5 hours of ‘Come Dine With Me’ burns 100 calories.
  • ·        Play 13 hands of poker and burn 100 calories.
  • ·        Sunbathing for 3 hours burns 210 calories.
  • ·        Building sandcastles for 30 minutes burns 180 calories.
  • ·        Play in the waves for 20 minutes and burn 160 calories.
  • ·        Play a game of Frisbee with your friends for 30 minutes and you can burn up to 100 calories.
  • ·        Reading in a hammock for 3 hours burns 220 calories.
  • ·        Go on a date: you tend to order food with fewer calories when on dates.
  • ·        Wear stilettos: it helps to tone your legs (maybe this is one just for the ladies…but then again maybe not).
  • ·        Slow dancing for 7 songs burns 100 calories.
  • ·        Showering a loved one with 9.240 kisses all over their body burns 100 calories.
  • ·        Smooching for 10 minutes burns 25 calories.
  • ·        Having sex burns 300 calories an hour.

Who knew burning calories could be so simple, and yet so enjoyable.

To infinity and beyond.

Who knows when I may be able to do a post again, as I only have 5 days left to finish all of my University work, so here is something to get you thinking:

If the American government has no knowledge of aliens, then why does Title 14, Section 1211 of the Code of Federal Regulations, implemented on July 16th 1969, make it illegal for U.S. citizens to have any contact with extra-terrestrials or their vehicles?

It is a provocative topic that many people have strong views on, they either believe or they don’t.

However, some of you may be on the same wavelength as me. Not quintessentially a believer, but more curious and intrigued at the amount of seemingly undeniable evidence.

It is of course, up to you whether you believe or not, but I personally find it very hard to believe that with all the masses of stars in the universe, and at least 50% of those stars harbouring planets, that we were so lucky to be the only planet capable of life. There are an estimated 1 trillion planets in the Milky Way alone!

Furthermore it is hard to believe that all the sightings of UFO’s and all the evidence from crashed landings and crop circles etc. are all just figures of people’s imaginations.  Granted, a lot of sightings may just be stray Chinese lanterns (you know who you are) but there must be some that are real.

I must admit now that I am very easily swayed by the ‘alternative’ explanation and the conspiracy theories of virtually every significant incident that has happened in humanity. [The most controversial of which being the 911 attacks but more on that in another post]

I must also warn you that I am no expert on astronomy, physics, extra-terrestrials  or any of the such like so make of this what you will.

The following are some of the most interesting and intriguing indications of aliens that I have found:

  • ·        The UFO phenomenon has been around for as long as humans have existed, they have been depicted in art spanning back centuries.

  • ·        Astronauts frequently see UFO’s and have done since the very first expeditions into space.

  • ·        We claim to be the most advanced beings this world has seen yet we can’t even replicate the pyramids in Egypt which were built thousands of years ago.
  • ·        Cave paintings very clearly depict space ships.

  • ·   Area 51, Roswell and secret government projects which are leaked with time make it surprising that they have no information of existence of aliens.

  • ·        Crop circles. Obviously not all of them are authentic but for the ones that are it is something which contradicts the hypothesis of aliens not existing. Scientists say that all it takes is for one crop circle to be real and the whole claim that aliens don’t exist is rendered false.

  • ·        There have been numerous amounts of ex-government people who have come out and spilled the beans, although these are not obviously shown on major networks.

I hope that this has given you all something to ponder until I next have time to shock and amaze you all with another post.

NB. The American government have in fact now axed the above legislation after a mass uproar and inquest into why it was created. Even though it is no longer in place it still begs the question why it was ever implemented to begin with.
